St. James’ pilgrim’s path – or the way to „Paradise“ E-mail

They’ve walked up to 800 kilometers, they suffered, they cried, they resisted icy snow-storms – but now they’re finally sitting in front of the Cathedral of Santiago de Compostela. Matchless met with four pilgrims and got a unique insight into experiences gathered from the Way of St. James.

Tradition has it that the remains of St. James are buried in the cathedral of Santiago de Compostela. Whenever St. James’ day falls on a Sunday (25 July), the cathedral declares a Holy or Jubilee Year – and this is the case this year. The city is expecting thousands of pilgrims from all over the world.

By cable car I arrived at the Hohen Krippenstein mountain top (2108 m). I was overwhelmed by the scenery. In the far distance gleamed the Hallstätter und Schladminger glacier. The Hohe Dachstein (2995 m) rises in the middle of an ice desert.

Mighty. Wild. Dangerous. Beautiful. Silent. Demanding. Incredibly old. How would you describe mountains? I spent quite some time pondering how I wanna start this series. I closed my eyes and remembered many of the hikes I’ve done. I looked at photographs I took up there. I stopped. The answers (I thought) I sought were to be found in one of the BBC’s documentaries that bring an African elephant cow with her cub or a school of dolphins on the concerted hunt into our living rooms.
