I hope this week’s pick serves merely as a reminder of and not an introduction to the Munich Readery, an English language bookshop in town. Well, not really a shop, but more of a lounge.

Couches and comfy chairs are tucked between overstuffed bookcases and there’s always a friendly conversation to be found—amongst the shop’s loyal customers or with the delightful American couple that owns the place. A proper visit takes an entire afternoon. Pull a book from the shelves, sink into a chair by the window, and lose yourself in the story.

The shop is at the corner of Augustenstraße and Schellingstraße, so the street traffic outside is often heavy, but inside it’s calm and comfortable. The books are all used and emit that wonderful musty smell redolent of Grandma’s attic and long ago bedtime stories. If you’re a member of Munich’s English-speaking community, then it’s a good idea to join the Bulk Buyers Club, the Book Club, or the Reading for Writers group. This way you can buy and trade books at discounted prices, discuss the latest opus with a roomful of fellow intelligent and committed readers, or share your own work of brilliance with other geniuses of the craft.

The Readery also hosts a number of children’s events throughout the month. It’s maintained a steady following of devoted readers who frequently buy and trade books or join in one of the many social gatherings; it’s become a close-knit and dynamic community all its own. I urge you to join!

It's been one of m y famil y's favourite haunts for the last five year s too. Although I gotta say - the ph oto above look s like something from the Montague Family vault! W e've always fo und the general condition of the boo ks at the Munich Readery excellent, and so far hav en't smelt Grandma's attic in any of them But yes, comfy chairs, l ovely people, and a lots of e vents for readers, writers and the kids too.
