This interview is an extension of the former Interview with the bassist Yuri Goulubev. It is always interesting to have different replies to the same questions. This time the most talented 28 year old British pianist, Gwilym Simcock, replies to questions by Matchless Magazine. Gwilym is  both influenced by classical composers such as Maurice Ravel or Igor Stravinsky and by jazz musicians such as Keith Jarrett for his sophisticated improvisations on harmony. The interview reveals both musical sides of the pianist.

What happens when you cross Led Zeppelin with Janis Joplin? E-mail

Yes, yes, it's a bold statement to compare any band to Led Zeppelin, but if you’ve been to one of Asaf Avidan & the Mojo’s live shows, you’ll know what I mean. Avidan has a delicate and unusual voice, and the band’s live shows are breathtaking. Out of all the gigs I went to in 2009, Israeli band Asaf Avidan & the Mojos' concert in Munich last September was the best by far. Matchless had the privilege of meeting Asaf Avidan in the middle of the band’s 2010 European tour.

Visual artist Hana Vojáčková talks to us about her newest exhibition, Red Balloon 86; a series of evocative photographs reflecting the Chernobyl tragedy. The city of Pripyat was evacuated after the Chernobyl accident in April 1986 and since the disaster almost a quarter of a century ago, very few people have been permitted to enter the exclusion zone. Hana Vojáčková gained access to the desolate city and has produced very poignant images of a once bustling Communist city, now a deserted ghost town.

It is really different to go to a jazz performance so early on a Sunday morning. Upon arriving at BMW Welt, I was surprised by the number of people standing in line at the entrance. It stretched from the doors to the concert hall, about 500 meters. I finally made it to the crystal ball-shaped hall to see a floor to ceiling balcony starting with images of clouds and blue skies on screens on the walls. The best place for acoustics would have been at the balcony facing the stage, but to get these seats you certainly have to be there at 9 am (although the concert started at 11 am).

Andrea Kreuzhage (1000 Journals) : Interview E-mail

The 1000 Journals initiative is one of those fascinating projects that reveals a tremendous amount about human creativity. One thousand blank journals were distributed around the world, beginning in the summer of 2000, by an artist who called himself Someguy. The idea was to fill them – with anything, anything at all, and pass them on for others to add to. In 2003, Someguy received one completed journal back. What happened to the other 999? Filmmaker Andrea Kreuzhage decided to find out, and her film 1000 Journals tells the remarkable stories of those who have added to a journal. Matchless caught up with Andrea Kreuzhage to discuss the project.

Munich offers art all over the place - besides galleries - but this one is special: It’s an honorary gallery that displays art created by kids. The art is not for sale but it’s definitely worth a visit as it’s not only a beautiful project but also something very social.
