Oh yes, winter has arrived. And as it looks like it’s here to stay for the next few weeks, I’ll leave any whining about chapped lips, dry skin and frozen nostrils for another day. The week starts with a Belgian invasion – The Bony King of Nowhere (from Ghent) is playing at the Kranhalle. His music is chilled out (check out Eleonore), his voice has something of Thom Yorke (Bram Vanparys’ artist’s name is a clear tribute to Radiohead, who also used the phrase as a subtitle to There There…). The citizens of Munich stood their ground on Saturday 21st January as they clashed against police and neo-Nazis. Munich, a city known for its laid back Biergarten culture, found itself at the center of a heated, three tiered show of force. A group of right wing neo-Nazis, consisting of around fifty participants, staged a legal demonstration in the center of the city. Despite the cold rainy weather they were vastly outnumbered by a sharp counter-protest, which included thousands of disapproving residents. Hundreds of riot police were brought in from various regions of Germany and made their powerful presence known as they tried to separate the two groups from confrontation. The event led to massive disruption of traffic, public safety services, public transportation, pedestrians and the calm beer drinking demeanor of Munich.

Wine tasting is a seminar for the senses; an intense few hours where you can learn more about that beverage that's captivated humanity for the last eight thousand years. You may live in the beer capital of the world, the home of Oktoberfest and raucous festivals that celebrate strong beer and yes, you're living in a country whereby on average each person drinks 115 liters of beer a year, but there are a few fighting the corner for wines. There are still several fantastic wine bars in the city - Weinhaus Neuer, in existence since 1852 and South African wine bar Ilanga for instance. Munich even hosts an annual wine expo, featuring international and local wines. Put down your Augustiner and pick up a good Shiraz.

It's been a quiet few months at Matchless - we're at two antitheses - hibernation or snowboarding in the mountains. But here's a little update from me as to what's happening in Munich next week.

They knew what they were expected to do. For thousands of years these rules have been obeyed, by their parents, their grandparents and their great-grandparents, back into those dark and hazy times where the two trajectories of reality and myth finally meet.

Maybe most of you consider yourself exclusive, cool or trendy. You think that your alternative style of life, your fashion and your hobbies are original and some other people believe that they are creating a trend or are a proponent of avant-garde…No, my dears, it was already made, you are just following a movement called hipster.
